Kumbha means a pitcher and Mela means fairinSanskrit. The name Kumbh Mela comes from Hindi, and in theoriginalSanskrit and other Indian languages it is more often knownasKumbha Mela. The riversatthese four places are: the Ganges (Ganga) at Haridwar,theconfluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the Yamuna and themythicalSaraswati at Allahabad, the Godawari at Nashik, and theShipra atUjjain. Ardha ("Half") Kumbh Mela is held at onlytwoplaces, Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these fourplacesevery twelfth year. It is held every third year at oneof thefour places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga),Nashik andUjjain. It is considered to bethelargest peaceful gathering in the world where around 100million(10 crore) people were expected to visit during the MahaKumbh Melain 2013 in Allahabad. The offering oftheleaves are considered so important that it is believed thatsomeonewho offers them without any intentions will be rewardedgreatly.Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in whichHindusgather to bathe in a sacred river. Bel(aeglemarmelos) leaves are often offered up to the Hindu god, as itisconsidered necessary for a successful life. Thisritual, practiced throughout the night, is oftenperformed everythree hours with water, milk, yogurt, and honey. Mahashivaratri marks the night when LordShivaperformed the 'Tandava' and it is the day that Lord Shivawasmarried to Parvati. This festival is of utmost importance to thedevotees ofLord Shiva. Maha Shivratri(Sivarathiri) is a festival celebrated everyyear on the 13th dayin the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalgunain the Hinducalendar. Other popular names associated with Shiva areMahadeva,Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra,Rishikesha(Man ofknowledge), Hara, Trilochan, Devendra (meaningChief of the gods)and Trilokinatha (meaning Lord of the threerealms). Shiva is usually worshiped in the formofLingam. The main iconographical attributes ofShivaare the third eye on his forehead, the snake Vasuki aroundhisneck, the adorning crescent moon, the holy river Ganga flowingfromhis matted hair, the trishula as his weapon and the damaru ashismusical instrument.
